It seldom happens, that different versions of the hang are together in one place at the same time. A few days ago such a rare moment took place when I visited PANArt in Bern and found a lonely 2006 built hang among the crowd of 2007 built instruments in the Hanghaus. Having my first generation hang with me I used the golden opportunity to take a picture of almost the whole hang family.
Nine days ago I recorded “The Day Church Bells Became Aware Of Their Profane Hearts And Decided Not To Sing For The Glory Of God Any Longer” with a small voice recorder. Now my new recording equipment, a Rode NT1-A condenser microphone and an ART Tube MP preamp, has arrived, my first recording atempt was to produce a higher quality version of this hypnotic piece of music.
Today I realisized a piece of music I had in mind for several months. For the recording I used a small digital voice recorder hanging 15 cm over the hang’s surface. Afterwards I utilized Power Lame to convert the wma file of the voice recorder into a wav file. Then I cut it with WaveLab Lite, a pretty little program being part of Steinberg’s Cubasis VST, and added a bass boost. Finally the wav file was converted into mp3 with Power Lame. In view of this minimalist “studio technique”, the sound quality of the recording seems not good but passably satisfying.
“The Day Church Bells Became Aware Of Their Profane Hearts And Decided Not To Sing For The Glory Of God Any Longer” is a piece of program music and follows the idea of minimal music.

Gerade stieß ich bei Google auf eine tief in den unendlichen Weiten des Internets versteckte Fotoserie, die Jacopino Giacomo offenbar bei einem Fest anlässlich des zehnjährigen Bestehens von PANArt im Jahr 2004 aufgenommen hat.
Besonders beeindruckend: Ein urzeitlich anmutendes, bauchiges Fossil, welches ein Urahn unserer heutigen Hanghang zu sein scheint. Ein Einblick in die Werkstatt lässt eine Ahnung davon aufkommen, wie die Hanghang ans Licht der Existenz gelangen. Und bemerkenswert fand ich ebenfalls, dass Omri Hason sein Hang genauso schräg hält, wie ich es meist tue. Aber stöbert am besten selbst in dieser Gallerie herum.
21st - 23rd September 2007 a weekend meeting called “Hang Out UK 2007″ will take place on Mellow Farm in Farnham, UK.
“The Hangout is a jamming weekend for people passionate about the Hang from across the world to come and join together to learn new techniques and play Hang. During the weekend various workshops will be available in the Barn or down by the river, as well as a chance for people to jam and make music”, the organizers of the event write on the Hang Out UK 2007 Webpage.
From the very deepness, the inner hang looks at a strange world outside.

Seit einigen Wochen habe ich mein Hang quergelegt. Spielte ich es bis dahin entweder mit dem PANArt-Logo zu mir hin oder von mir weggerichtet und rätselte, welche Haltung wohl die günstigere sei, verfiel ich in einem Augenblick intuitiver Klarheit unvermittelt auf die Idee, das Instrument so zu drehen, dass die hohen Tonfelder und der PANArt-Schriftzug auf der linken Seite lagen.
Seit einigen Wochen besitze ich einen Multi-Percussions-Ständer für mein Hang. Er ermöglicht das Spielen im Stehen. So kann ich mich freier um das Instrument bewegen als beim Spielen im Sitzen mit dem Hang auf dem Schoß. Die tiefen Frequenzen und manche Obertöne kommen beim Spielen auf dem Ständer etwas stärker heraus. Ich vermute, weil die Beine die Resonanz stärker abdämpfen als die wenigen Berührungspunkte des Ständers.
