A few days ago the American Musician and Hang player Matt Venuti published an article on his website where he answers some of the frequent questions that people ask him about the Hang.

Questions like

• How old is the Hang and from what culture did it arise?
• Is the Hang easy to play?
• Can the Hang be played with other instruments?
• What kind of instrument is the Hang?
• Why is it so difficult to obtain a Hang?

and others.

“The Hang, an instrument for our time” by Matt Venuti is one of the rare publications reflecting player’s experiences with the quite new Free Integral Hang. It explains an approach to the instrument that for some people seem to be “other-worldly” if compared to the usual musical context and may help to close some information gaps especially for English speaking readers.

In the year 2001 PANArt introduced the Hang. 10 years later the Hang builders at PANArt, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, are using this anniversary as an opportunity to communicate to a broad public where the “call of iron” has taken them, where they stand today and how they intend to continue. The Hang Library publishes the PANArt communication in four different languages: German, English, French and Italian.

10 Jahre nach der Vorstellung des Hang im Jahr 2001 nehmen die Hangbauer der PANArt, Felix Rohner und Sabina Schärer, das runde Jubiläum zum Anlass, darüber Auskunft zu geben, wohin der “Ruf des Blechs” sie geführt hat, wo sie mit ihrer Arbeit heute stehen und wie sie weiterzugehen gedenken. Die Hangbibliothek veröffentlicht das Communiqué der PANArt in vier Sprachen: Deutsch, englisch, französisch und italienisch.

In 2011 PANArt continues building the Free Integral Hang as in the last year. It is not tuned to the pitch A = 440 Hertz and no different scales will be made – not even on individual request. The price for a Hang including natural fibre case remains 2000 CHF as in recent years (since 2008). Due to the changing of currency rate the price in Euro is adjusted and will amount 1600 € in this year.

Im Jahr 2011 baut die PANArt wie im letzten Jahr das Freie Integrale Hang. Es werden also auch weiterhin keine unterschiedlichen Skalen eingestimmt – auch nicht auf Einzelanfrage – und die Stimmung ist nicht auf den Kammerton a = 440 Hertz normiert. Der Preis für ein Hang in Schweizer Franken beträgt wie in den letzten Jahren (seit 2008) inklusive Naturfaserkoffer 2000 CHF. Wegen des veränderten Wechselkurses wurde der Preis in Euro jetzt angepasst und beträgt in diesem Jahr 1600 Euro.

On the occasion of its 10th jubilee PANArt released an anniversary publication in the year 2003. A selection of texts contained in this publication can be downloaded in the Hang Library now. All texts are in German language.

2007 was the second year when PANArt built the new generation of Hanghang. The Hang Library documents the “Letter from Hangbauhaus” sent by the hang makers to people who had contacted them to ask for a Hang. It contained a short history of the development of the Hang, introduced the new generation of Hanghang and explained how the Hang was distributed in the year 2007.

Wer an der Geschichte des Hang interessiert ist, findet zwei neue Veröffentlichungen in der Hangbibliothek.

Im Jahr 2003 feierte die PANArt ihr zehnjähriges Bestehen und veröffentlichte aus diesem Anlass eine Jubiläumsschrift. Eine Auswahl der darin erschienenen Texte, die insbesondere die Vorgeschichte des Hang beleuchtet, kann nun in der Hangbibliothek heruntergeladen werden.

2007 war das zweite Jahr, in dem das Hang der neuen Generation gebaut wurde. Die Hangbibliothek dokumentiert nun den “Brief vom Hangbauhaus” mit dem die PANArt im Frührjahr des Jahres Interessenten über das Hang der neuen Generation und das Prozedere der Hangverteilung informierte.

Der eigentliche Star des Portico Quartet, so Martin Uhrmeister in seinem Beitrag fürs arte Kulturmagazin Metropolis vom 4. Juli (ab 31:10 min), sei das Hang. Und pflichtgemäß weiß er zu berichten, Hang bedeute Hand, und so solle es auch im Sinne der Erfinder Felix Rohner und Sabina Schärer gepielt werden. Anschließend hört und sieht man in den gesamten 4 Minuten und 28 Sekunden des Beitrags Hangspieler Nick Mulvey ausschließlich mit den Schlägeln hantieren – Was auch nicht groß zu verwundern vermag, traut sich doch beim Portico Quartet nur selten einmal eine Hand ans Blech.
