Robert demonstrates the Integral Hang

Integral Hang 2008Back from his journey to Berne Robert shares a video with us demonstrating the new Integral Hang introduced by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in February 2008. The Integral Hang comes with a new hard case. It has a new design of the Ding and the Gu is slightly oval. Look and listen how Robert demonstrates the overtones of each tone field and the Ding and the sounds of the rim of the Gu. All Integral Hanghang will have the same scale: A D3-Ding and a tone circle with A3, Bb3, C4, D4, E4, F4, A4. While PANArt created an amount of more than 45 sound models for the Hanghang from 2001 to 2004, they reduced the number of scales in the following years and found now the sound model they think it is the one and only.

    Wow, I’m famous now!

    =)

Let me say that I am far from a musician or an expert on playing the Hang, so please excuse my clumsy play. I am just starting to understand the overtone generative properties of the Hang, and I am not really specifically displaying their possibilities, rather, just simply ‘playing around’ the tone field. I am finding that where and how you strike makes a significant difference, but I am far from proficient in knowing how to approach the sweet spots.

Robert, your playing is far from being clumsy. This worldwide first demonstration on YouTube wasn’t made to show the player’s virtuosity but to demonstrate the basics of the new Integral Hang. And by the way: “The allure of Hang playing does not lie in virtuosity, but in playing intuitively, in such a way as to allow space for these sounds.” the Hang Makers wrote when they introduced the Hang of the year 2007. And in my point of view this is an important awareness when someone begins the journey with his Hang.

Greetings. I await with great excitement to receive my integral hang in December. Truly an instrument born of the heart. I am curious if the scale for the new 2008 Hang has a particular origin? A name? I feel sad there is not a variety to choose from, though, I am grateful overall. Peace to all.

    Hi Ranganatha,
the second generation Hang (2006-2007) and the Integral Hang have no named sound models like the first generation Hang. All I know about Hang sound models I published in the Hang Lexicon and in the article Hang Sound Models. Because the D is the centre of the Integral Hang one can say that all notes belong to the D minor scale.
